Eagle Scout builds handicap-accessible fishing pier

Handicap fishermen have another place to drop their lines thanks to the work of an area Eagle Scout and the Lake Shelbyville Corps of Engineers.

The pond between the General Dacey Trail and East Ninth Street/Dam West Recreation area received the new pier August 17. Jacob Gaugh, 15, of Strasburg headed the construction crew including a scout master, two other scouts, family, friends, and Corps personnel who measured, cut, and hammered the pieces together the 10 x 20 foot pier.

“I asked the Corps about doing a project and they had me pick something from their list,” Gaugh said. “We planned out a rough sketch at the beginning and edited it to codes they had to follow.”

Phil Manhart, ranger with the Corps of Engineers, said that the Corps has a list of projects that work well with the Eagle Scout requirements.

“It allow them experience to get their Eagle Scout patch,” Manhart said.

Manhart explained that the Corps supervises and supplies the materials for the project. The scout is involved in the planning and enlists the help of family and friends.

The pier is open for easy access and has rails on three sides. It projects out over the pond by about three feet. The approach to the pier is rocked. It is complete and ready to use.

“Their (Corps’) plan is to stock the pond with bass and crappie,” Gaugh said.

“We may be adding a bench or some other amenities to it in the future,” Manhart said.

The pond is accessible from the high water boat ramp road and turning east on the Dacey Trail, from the visitor parking inside the Dam West recreation area gate and taking the Dacey Trail north, or from the trail head at the boat parking area and going west on the Dacey Trail.

Gaugh is a the son of John and Ronella Gaugh and is a member of the Stewardson-Strasburg Troop 142.

Another Eagle Scout project is planned at Lone Point in September, according to Manhart. The Corps welcomes more Eagle Scouts to consider the Corps’ project list for their badges.
