City Council puts Santa House up for bids

The Shelbyville City Council has put the Santa house up for bids. The house sat in the downtown mini park until it was recently moved for the mini park renovations.

Commissioner Gib Smart reported that there is an advertisement in the paper taking bids for the old Santa house The building currently sits across the alley south of the mini park.

“The building is rotted out,” Smart said. “The best thing to do is get the Chamber of Commerce involved to have Santa located somewhere else such as the Annex.”

The council tabled the only item on the agenda for the evening Monday.

Commissioner Bill Shoaff suggested tabling the proposed purchase of storm warning siren system.

“It is going to be over $10,000. I feel we need to get another bid,” he said. Shoaff noted that the Shelbyville school board gave permission to place a siren on the high school property.

Commissioner Shoaff reported that radio antennas for emergency services and law enforcement were being put back on the west end water tower.

Under new business, Commissioner Thom Schafer noted that there was some confusion about the design on the additional parking west of the Shelby County State Bank. City Engineer Alan Spesard said he would get the cost for a retaining wall between that parking and the municipal lot

“It would be a boon to parking is we can extend it (municipal parking lot),” Schafer said.

The council is continuing negotiations with the Fraternal Order of Police and the operating engineers unions.
