DAR to honor Good Citizen recipients

Shelbyville Daily Union

---- — The Ann Crooker St. Clair Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet Saturday, November 16 at the First Baptist Church located at the corner of Fayette and Banker in Effingham. The meeting is set to begin at 9 am.

November is traditionally the month when the DAR honors a Good Citizen winner from each of the following high schools: Altamont, Beecher City, Cowden-Herrick, Dieterich, Effingham, Stew-Stras, St. Anthony, and Teutopolis. A Good Citizen winner is chosen by each of the schools. The winner from each school is then asked to write an essay, which has been sent to the chapter. The title of the essay was: “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It: How Does One’s Personal Heritage Affect One’s Duties to Our Nation?”

Florann Field, DAR Good Citizen Chairman, was delighted with the quality of all the essays. She stated “After reading each of the essays, I know our country will be in fine shape when they are our leaders. What beautiful examples of our future.”

Ellie Maroon, DAR Good Citizen Committee Member, will present the winner from each school with a special DAR pin and a certificate.

Lisa Light will be presenting the program, “Beyond the Classroom, Lessons in Character.”

“History of Effingham County” books are still available. The 1883 and 1910 reprints are being sold together for $35. There are only a few copies available. You may contact Deanna Higgs at dshiggs@live.com or by calling her at 217-821-2563.
