Coat Drive Tribute to Son’s Compassion

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — One man’s compassion for children without coats as led to a mission for a Shelbyville mother.

The first annual Jason Jordan Memorial Coat Drive is looking to ensure that all children have coats to wear this winter.

The drive begins December 15 and runs through December 29 with drop off points at Casey’s, County Market, Walmart, Qik-N-EZ, Community Banks of Shelby County in Shelbyville, Cowden and Herrick, Shelbyville Chamber of Commerce, and Shelby Christian Church. Look for a Christmas wrapped box.

The Jason Jordan Memorial Coat Drive is the brainchild of Dawn Reeves of Shelbyville, mother of Jason Jordan.

Jordan passed away in July 2011,

“I was trying to think of something for him to be remembered,” Reeves said. “He was always concerned about children who did not have a coat. There was a time when I had bought him a new coat. He went to school wearing it and came home without it. He had given his new coat to a student who did not have a coat. He was all about ‘parents: bundle up your kids’.”

Reeves also noted that Shelby Christian Church, who hosts coat giveaways for the Ministerial Association, has had to turn away people because they did not have enough coats to give.

She plans to give the collected coats to the Shelby Christian Church and to Big Momma’s Closet who will  distribute them to those in need.

“This year my goal is that the church or Big Momma’s Closet turn away no child in need of a coat,” Reeves said.

“What she is doing is a great tribute to her son,” said Shelby Christian Church pastor Mark Sanders. “There is obviously a definite need in our community. We are more than please to work with her (Reeves) to fill the need.”

Reeves also hopes parents will encourage their children to put the coat donation into the box so that they understand the giving and will grow up to become givers.

This year’s project is collecting all sizes of gently used children’s coats through adult medium coats only due to space issues. Reeves is hopeful that next year the collection can include the larger adult sizes.

Reeves added that all donated coats will be washed or dry cleaned before they are available to give away. Custom Care has doanted dry cleaning services for the project.
