American Legion Auxiliary Liberty Unit 289 President Sarah Wyckoff called to order the August 15, 2018 meeting. Those in attendance sang God Bless America.

Roll call was taken with five officers present.

The charter was draped in a memorial ceremony for Liberty Unit 289 member Gladys Nippe who passed away on June 30, 2018.

Sydney Eastin and her mother, Bobbie Eastin, were present. Sydney gave her report as one of Strasburg’s 2018 American Legion Auxiliary Illini Girls State delegates. Sydney was in Sienkiewicz City and was a Federalist. Sydney said it was an amazing experience and she learned so much about the government. Sydney was a wonderful representative of the Strasburg Unit.

Bonnie Lawrence gave a membership report. There was one new Junior member, 2 VIMs, and 33 Senior and 15 Junior members paid for 40%.

The Gladys Nippe Memorial Scholarship from Gladys’ memorial funds was created. It will be awarded to a Stewardson-Strasburg High School Senior who is continuing their education in an ag-related field. The scholarship will be awarded for three years.

Regarding the Mary Anderson Memorial Scholarship, the Unit offer a $500 scholarship for a non-traditional student to be awarded this fall. Those interested in applying should contact Cinda Held, and the application is due to her October 1st.

Sarah Wyckoff, Linda Oakley, Cinda Held, and Jill Layton reported on the Department Convention held in Springfield in July. The Unit received Department plaques for their first place entries in National Security (Chairman Jill Layton), Junior Activities (Chairman Linda Oakley), Public Relations (Chairman Linda Oakley), Children & Youth (Chairman Jamie Brown), and Education (Chairman Sarah Wyckoff). Deb Lewis of the 19th District was installed as the 2018-2019 Department President. Her theme is: Respect-Conserve-Preserve. Patti Williamson of the 19th District was installed as the 2081-2019 Department 2nd Vice President.

Liberty Unit 289 has chosen as their monthly service projects the following items:

September – items to send to Nick Grieco who was deployed

October – VA drive

November – gifts for teachers (National Education Week is November 12-16)

December – Toy Drive or items for One Stop Christmas Store

President Wyckoff will select the months in which each Unit Chairman will report on their programs. The Unit Chairman will use the National and Department website, as well as the ALA Today and 19th District Bulletin, for information on their program.

On July 31, 2018, 1361 coupons worth $2,221.75 were submitted.

Linda Oakley reported that since March 12th, the Unit has received $10,835 in credit from the VAs.

Following the meeting, installation was conducted of the 2018-2019 Unit officers. The Post and Unit enjoyed “Taco Tuesday” as a Legion family for their first meeting of the 2018-2019 year.
