Retired U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps, Capt. Carl Courtright, 79, of Virginia Beach, VA passed away peacefully, attended by his loving family November 16, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Ann Williams Courtright; his parents, Harry and Ruby Courtright; brother, Richard and sisters, Ruth and Helen.
Capt. Courtright was a graduate of Shelbyville High School, 1947, attended the United States Naval Academy graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Graduate education included Rensselaer Poly Institute, 1955, master's degree in civil engineering and University of Illinois, 1962, master's degree in structural and nuclear engineering. Capt Courtright served in the United States Navy for 30 years, retiring in 1979 and received numerous awards including the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, Silver Star, and Legion of Merit. After retirement from the military, he worked for the Hampton Roads Sanitation District retiring in 1990.
Left to celebrate his life are his son, Dr. Michael Richard Courtright and wife Cynthia; his daughter, Julie Ann Carter and husband Gary; grandchildren, Kristin, Jennifer, Jason, Christopher and Michael Ryan; and great-granddaughter, Emma Jayne.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 6, 2009 in the Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Shelbyville with Rev. Lee Lovett officiating. There will be Masonic Rites held prior to the service. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville with Military Rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard.
