Delmar Heiter


South Bend, IN, formerly of Assumption

Delmar Heiter, 87, of South Bend, IN, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014, in his home.

He was born February 18, 1927, in Assumption, Illinois, a son of Emmett and Gertrude (Campbell) Heiter, and has lived in South Bend since 1969, when he moved from Decatur, IL.

On December 12, 1954, in Moweaqua, IL, Del was united in marriage to Evelyn L. Jesse. They have enjoyed fifty-nine years of marriage together. Also surviving are his daughter Kathy S. (Tom) Wirtz of Lakeville, IN; his two sons, Samuel L. (Danita) Heiter of South Bend, IN; Tim (Jennifer) Heiter of Bremen, IN; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Ilene Wise of Moweaqua, IL, and Marguerite Jackson of Assumption, IL. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Jean Reevis, Donna Wheeler, and Roseland Heiter.

Del was a World War II army veteran and retired as Principle Operations Inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration.

He was a longtime member and Deacon of Northway Church of Christ, a life member of International Union of Operating Engineers, and a member of American Legion Post #303, River Park, and V.F.W. Post 1167.

For most of Del's life, he was a pilot, and flying was his passion. On his first date with his wife Evelyn, he picked her up in a J-3 Cub.

Services celebrating the life of Del Heiter were held Saturday, May 10, at Northway Church of Christ, South Bend, with Pastor Ed Erskin and Chuck Wotring officiating. Graveside services and burial followed at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.
