SHELBY COUNTY — Harold L. "Monk" Duggins


Harold L. “Monk” Duggins, 86, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 11:02 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 14, 2014 in Shelby Memorial Hospital in Shelbyville, IL.

Mr. Duggins was born April 8, 1927 in Pemiscot County, MO the son of William Oliver “Pat” and Louise Hounihan Duggins.

He married Vesta Shain on April 2, 1955 in Hernando, Miss. After her passing, he married Mary Pauline Shuler Boyer.

Monk retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1989. He served his country, honorably, in the United States Army during WWII.

Monk was well known for his many years of volunteer service to the elderly while assisting in nursing homes in Shelbyville.

Monk was a member of Masonic Lodge # 53, American Legion Post #71 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4829 all of Shelbyville.

Surviving are his wife Pauline Duggins; sisters: Roma Dortch and Lois Louise Cunningham both of Fisk, MO daughter Mary Beth Land of Shelbyville; step sons: Paul Bennett of Big Bear City, CA and Tony (Donna) Bennett of Macks Creek, MO; granddaughters: Dena (Steve) Darnell of Shelbyville, Christie (Tony) Meyer of Springfield, IL, Tonya (Shawn) Kaser of Raymore, MO; sister-in-law Sue (Richard) Hedrick of Byrnes Mill, MO, several great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and a host of friends, especially Bill Howard.

He was preceded in death by wife Vesta, parents and brothers: Delbert Duggins, James Duggins and Oliver William Duggins Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday Jan. 18, 2014 in the First Church of the Nazarene at 701 West North Third St. in Shelbyville. Pastor Greg Breeden will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:00AM until the time of the service on Saturday in the church. A graveside service with military rites will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday Jan. 19, 2014 in Ash Hill Cemetery near Fisk, MO. Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene in Shelbyville or Donors Choice.
