Shelbyville

Gordon Monroe Reynolds passed away in his home. He was born February 19, 1943 to Lester Monroe and Olive Mae Gordon Reynolds. He lived in Shelbyville most of his life.

Gordon dropped out of high school at the age of 17 and joined the service in September of 1960. He got his GED while serving in the military. He was a Vietnam Veteran. He served three tours in Vietnam. He possibly was one of the most highly decorated soldiers in Shelby County and possibly Illinois.

Here is a listing of the medals he received throughout his service in the United States Army.

National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Air Medal with Numerals 21, Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal Clasp, Bronze, 2 Loops, Valorous Unit Award with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. One day lost under Title 10 USC 942 from April 4, 1974 when the helicopter he was on was shot down. Gordon was a machine gunner on this vessel. A missile was shot into the helicopter and exploded causing it to go down. Some of the crew lost their lives and Gordon seriously injured and almost lost his life..

Gordon was a lifetime member of VFW Post 4829 of Shelbyville.

Gordon is survived by one son, Gordon Reynolds Jr. (Lisa) of Mattoon; daughters, Jeannie Reynolds (friend, Joyce Moorefield) of Mahomet and Angie Baker (Carl) of Tuscola; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; sisters, Janet Rentfro of Mode, Debra Fitzgerald of Pana and Myra Ulmer (Scott) of Shelbyville. Preceding him in death are his parents and son, Johnny Reynolds.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Arrangements are by Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Shelbyville.
