Formerly of Cowden

Doris Jean Niehls, age 80, of Barto, PA passed on from this life Wednesday, March 26 2014. She died on the family farm at the home of her son Jonathan and his wife Mary (Colden), with loving family.

Doris was born November 21, 1933 to Vern (Joe) F. and Ruby P. (Rentfrow) Rich in Cowden, IL. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.

Doris is survived by her brother Stanley D. Rich of Cowden, IL, and 3 sons: Mark husband of Beverly (Koch) of Douglassville, PA, Kevin husband of Jane (Wendel) of Barto, PA, and Jonathan (JD) husband of Mary (Colden) of Barto, PA, a nephew Lonnie Joe Rich, his wife Cindy and their son Douglass Rich of Herrick, IL. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Three additional great grandchildren are on the way! One grandson Jonathan Joseph (JJ) and his wife Beth (Dittman) Niehls live in Bluff City, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and high school sweetheart and loving husband Johnnie Mark, formerly of Beecher City, IL of 62 years, a brother Glenn L. Rich and his wife Faye of Herrick, IL a sister Wanda L. (Rich) Waarala and her husband Gordon, of Normal, IL, and one great granddaughter Julia Paige Niehls.

Doris was a homemaker, seamstress, and farmer having grown up on the family farm in Cowden, IL where she was born and raised. She and her husband purchased her current farm in PA in 1966. Doris worked at home on the family farm, gardening and preserving produce, made clothes for the family and volunteered at the schools her sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren attended. After her sons were all in school she worked many years as a seamstress. Yard sale and thrift store shopping was her hobby and she always enjoyed picking up some clothing or toys for her children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, quilting, and crafting.

She grew up attending the Oak Grove Church of Christ of Cowden, IL. At the time of her death she was a member of the Chesmont Church of Christ, Pottstown, PA. She served as a Bible class and Vacation Bible School teacher and volunteer in three congregations: the Coventry Hills Church of Christ, Pottstown, PA, the Roseville Church of Christ, Roseville, MN, and the Chesmont Church of Christ, Pottstown, PA. Doris’s life was dedicated to living humbly as a Christian, loving and providing for her family, promoting the cause of Christ, and spreading the Gospel.

Doris supported the education and schools her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren attended, specifically Coventry Christian Schools in Pottstown where all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren attended. She was a founding member of the Grandparents Gathering of Coventry Christian Schools which raises several thousand dollars annually for the school. Doris and her husband John were generous contributors over the years to the school and took great pride in supporting construction of the school’s Events Center in 2010.

She will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Shelbyville Church of Christ, 800 West South Second Street, Shelbyville IL 62565. Graveside service and final internment will be in the family plot in the Hubbartt Cemetery, Beecher City, IL Saturday, July 26th 2014.
