SHELBY COUNTY — Robert Joseph Simmering
Formerly of Shelbyville
Robert Joseph Simmering, 51, of Yigo, Guam and formerly of Shelbyville, Illinois, was called to his eternal rest on January 18, 2014 at Guam Memorial Hospital in Tamuning, Guam.
Robert was born on July 19, 1962 in Shelbyville, Illinois. He was the youngest child of Richard and Chloanne (Gierhart) Simmering. He was a graduate of Shelbyville High School, class of 1980. He then joined the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country as a welder until his retirement in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1996. In 2010, he was hired as an Aircraft Refueling contractor for KBR and was stationed in Iraq until 2012, at which time he relocated to Angeles City, Philippines.
He enjoyed scuba diving, spearfishing, and metal detecting. He also loved to play the guitar and harmonica with his favorite dog, Jake.
Robert is survived by his wife, Mary Abraham Simmering of Kolonia, Pohnpei, his daughters, Jeannette Nicole Simmering, Christine Marie (Simmering) Hawkins and Kelly Anne (Simmering) Heffington all of Chattanooga, Tenn. He is also survived by his baby granddaughter, Peyton Elizabeth Heffington of Chattanooga, TN. Also surviving him are his step-mother LaVergne (Goralski) Simmering of Shelbyville, IL; his brothers; John Simmering of Norman, OK, James (Mike) Simmering of Troy, IL, Bill Simmering of Urbana, IL, Steve Simmering of Ophiem, IL; stepsisters Karen (Goralski) Block of Joliet, IL and Laurie Goralski of Louisville, KY; and step brother Alan Goralski of Shelbyville, IL.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Chloanne (Gierhart) Simmering, father Richard Simmering of Shelbyville, IL, sister Susan (Simmering) Kersey of Mattoon, IL and step brother Steven Goralski of Shelbyville, Il.
Robert is also survived by numerous family and friends on Guam, Kosrae, Pohnpei, CNMI, Hawaii and the USA.
He was loved immensely and is greatly missed by all.
A private church service will be held for him at Barrigada Church in Barrigada, Guam at 5:30 pm on Saturday, January 25th 2014. A viewing for family and friends will also be held at Ada’s Funeral Home from 2:30 pm until 5:30 pm on Monday, January 27, 2014.
