Donald Ray McCormick of Folsom, CA passed away on February 28.
Don was born in Effingham, IL on August 27, 1941, and graduated from Shelbyville High School. He received his BA from the University of Illinois, his Masters in Public Administration from Shippensburg University, and graduated from the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle, PA. A Vietnam veteran, he also served the Army in Germany, Italy, Japan, Hawaii, and elsewhere. He retired as a colonel, with his last position as Inspector General for the California National Guard. Then he spent 15 years as an investigator for the State Fair Political Practices Commission and worked for the State Department of Veterans Affairs. Remembered as a wine aficionado who loved to cook for his friends, he was an avid hiker and fisherman who enjoyed the occasional round of golf.
He is survived by his wife Michele, whom he met in 1976 when he served as head of the Honor Guard on the Bicentennial American Freedom Train and she was the on-board press officer. He is also survived by his mother, Bernis McCormick of Shelbyville, IL; sister Cindy Collins (Don) of Logansport, IN; and brothers Arlyn McCormick (Tess) of Godfrey, IL; and Stan “Butch” of Shelbyville, IL. A memorial service was held in Folsom on March 6, 2014.
