Burl K. Kessel, 92, of Lakewood, IL, passed away at 6:15 PM Thursday Sept. 5, 2013 in Eastview Terrace in Sullivan, IL

Burl was born Nov. 6, 1920 in Windsor IL the son of Fred C. and Jane Hudson Kessel.

He married Marjorie Plowman on Nov. 19, 1941 in Michigan and she passed away May 22, 2005.

Burl worked as a rural mail carrier for many years and also farmed in the Lakewood area.

He honorably served his country during WWII in the United States Army Air Force. He was a prisoner of war along side his future brother-in-law, George Lawrence, until their release.

Burl enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling the country in his motor home.

Surviving are sons: David B. Kessel of Lakewood, IL and Fred (Sandy) Kessel of Shelbyville; daughters: Judith Johnson of South Haven, MS and Ruth (James) Riley of Columbus, IN; ten grandchildren: Deanna Collier, Debra Snyder, Matthew Kessel, John Johnson, Larry Johnson, Cary Johnson, Bryan Riley, Becky Nasby, Shawn Riley, and Jaime Riley; seventeen great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; sister Mary Jane Taylor of Decatur and brother Albert Kessel of Ohio.

Burl was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; brother, Fred C. Kessel and sisters: Edith Storey, Beulah Hentz, Vera Halbrook and Vivian Sherwood.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday Sept. 8, 2013 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Rev. Wade Helmkamp will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until the time of the service on Sunday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Military rites will be performed by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be made in Burl’s memory to the Recreation and Activity Fund of East View Terrace of Sullivan, IL
