Joseph Ray Carter, 57, of Petersburg, VA, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014, at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA.

Joe was born in Shelbyville, IL, June 26, 1956, the son of Silas Eugene Carter and Mildred Morrison Carter. He graduated from Stewardson-Strasburg High School in 1974. He was a Military Police officer in the U.S. Army, reaching the rank of Master Sergeant. After retiring he then became a prison guard for the Virginia Prison System.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, his wife Pamela Jo (Bly) Carter, and brothers, Jack and David Carter.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother Mildred Black of Shelbyville, and children: Anthony (Becky) Carter, Kenneth (Betty) Carter, Laverne Verdeyen and Crystal; grandchildren: Destiny Buhls and Barbara Jo Taylor; brothers: Gene Carter and Donald Carter.

The family will receive friends at a service Saturday, February 1, in Virginia. At Joe's request all other services will be private and held at a later date.
