Virgil Lee Curtis

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Virgil Lee Curtis

Virgil Lee Curtis, 82, of Windsor, Ill. at 8:55 a.m. Saturday (May 31, 2014) at the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Ill.

Lee was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1931 in Urbana, Ill., the first baby born in Carle Hospital, to Perry and Helen (Page) Curtis of Windsor. He graduated from Windsor High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. And on August 29, 1954, Lee married Muriel Camfield in Windsor, and they remained together and in love for 59 years.

Lee is survived by Muriel; his son, Kevin Curtis (Mattoon, Ill.); his daughter-in-law Joann Curtis (Mattoon, Ill.); his daughter, Kim McPherson (Centennial, Colo.); his son-in-law, Doug McPherson (Centennial, Colo.); his grandchildren: Connor McPherson, Caitlin McPherson, Natalie Curtis and Perry Curtis; and his brother, Gene Curtis (Manassas, Va.).

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home in Windsor. Funeral services and burial will be held immediately following visitation at Cochran's Grove Cemetery. Military rites will be by Mattoon VFW Post # 4325. Memorials may be given to the Windsor Ambulance Service or the Windsor United Methodist Church.

Lee’s family extends its deepest appreciation to Lee's physicians, Dr. William Franklin, Dr. Mario Velasco, and the staff at Decatur Cancer Center for their exceptional professionalism and extraordinary skill in treating Lee.

Lee’s father, a farmer, died when Lee was just 14 and Lee took over the duties of the family farm in Windsor in 1945, the occupation he held for the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Windsor United Methodist Church and served on its leadership council and other committees for many years.

One of Lee’s favorite sayings was: “Be well, do good work and stay in touch.” He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, watching auto racing, visiting friends in Florida and staying on top of crop prices.

His family remembers Lee fondly as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His friends remember Lee for his honesty, work ethic, sense of humor and good nature.
