Marvin was born April 30, 1928 at the Moweaqua Hospital to Floyd Gregory and Hazel Wilson Jordan. He met Betty A. Shanks at a square dance and later married her on December 18, 1949 in Taylorville, Illinois. Marvin graduated from Moweaqua High School in 1946 where he enjoyed playing football and baseball. After high school he joined the Marines. He was always a very busy, hardworking farmer but still had time to enjoy life. He and Betty loved to travel and loved to square dance. They spent many Saturday evenings on the dance floor. He also loved to hunt, fish, ride horses with his daughters and friends, grow delicious watermelon, and give his many grandkids rides on the snowmobile or 4 wheeler. He enjoyed reading about history and loved collecting Indian arrowheads. He was well known as a great storyteller.
Marvin’s life was full of activities and full of love. He leaves behind his best friend and wife, Betty. Four daughters; Beverly (Chuck) McQuiggan of Maryville, Shelia (Randy) Meador of Moweaqua, Vera (Gary) Heiser of Decatur, and Judy (Mike) Juenger of Dixon. Marvin has 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren who will forever cherish their “grandpa memories”. He is also survived by his sister, Florence Ann Wooters, of Moweaqua, brother, Paul Jordan, of Sun Lakes, AZ, and sister-in-law, Eleanor Jordan, of Blue Mound and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Norman Jordan, brother-in-law, George Wooters, and sister-in-law, Marilyn Jordan.
Marvin was a member of Locust Grove Church where he accepted Jesus at a young age. At Locust Grove he used his gifts in teaching Sunday School and the Men’s class. For a period of time he was also the Church Treasurer and a trustee.
Marvin served as supervisor and trustee on the Moweaqua Township Board for 48 years; on the Shelby County Board for approximately 50 years with 12 of those years as Chairman; Moweaqua Co-op; the Private Industry Council and the 708 Mental Health Board. He served in WWII in the Marine Corps and was an active member in the American Legion Post #370 of Moweaqua where he served many years as commander. He was also a member of the NRA and ISRA.
The family wishes to thank the special, loving and caring staff at Imboden Creek Nursing Home. These men and women have been his second family this past year. We heard comments almost every day about how funny he was, how he made them laugh, and some who said, “I would just like to take him home with me”! We thank you so much for your care, but most of all for the love that you so freely gave to him.
