H. Jean Donaker
H. Jean Donaker, 89, of Springfield died at home Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 surrounded by her children.
She was born November 14, 1923 in Shelbyville, IL to Orrie and Nita (Ruff) Wade at the home of her maternal grandparents Tobias and Louisa Ruff. She married Robert D. Donaker on July 29, 1942 and he preceded her in death Oct. 3, 1970.
Also preceding her in death were her grandparents, parents, sisters, Ruby Baker and Geneva Puckett of Aurora, IL.
Jean is survived by two sons, Michael E. (Dianna) Donaker and David A. Donaker both of Springfield and daughter Robin (Terry) Brunner of Oakley, IL. Grandchildren Eric (Lisa) Burke, of Arizona, Nicole (Thadd) Sparrow, Owosso MI, Michael (Abby) Donaker , Jr, Decatur, Robert Donaker, St Louis MO, Tobias Donaker, Madison WI, Jeremy Brunner, Bloomington, Justin (Gabriela) Brunner, Minneapolis-St Paul MN, Jason Brunner, Jacob Brunner and step-grandson Shawn (Jessica) Brunner, all of Oakley. Great-Grandchildren Rylie Burke, Jackson Ott, Isabella and Brandon Donaker, Elijah and Evette Sparrow and step-great-grandchildren Reese, Morgan and Cortlen Brunner. Luciana Brunner of Minnesota is due to arrive October 8. Also surviving are Siblings John Wade and Leta Bruckner of Shelbyville, Velma (Jim) Lawson of Springfield, and Don (Carol) Wade of Decatur and many nieces and nephews.
Jean had a great love of family and friends. In running her beauty shop (1948-2008) she often said it was much more than styling hair, she was a friend and confidant to her customers. She served her last customer at age 84. She was proud of her country, having served as an ordinance worker at the Sangamon Ammunition Plant in Illiopolis, IL Oct 1943 - June 1945. In addition, she served as President of the American Legion Post 32 Auxiliary 1954-55 and Chapeau of Salon 225 Forty and Eight in 1997-98 and 2007-08. A member of Abeba Temple #42 Daughters of the Nile; Blue Ridge Club Auxiliary, Eagles Club 437 and an avid Bowler until the age of 85.
Jean is a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and was a 50+ year member of the First United Methodist church at its downtown Springfield location.
She requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church, 1229 S Grand Ave, Springfield, IL 62703 or the Salon 225 Forty and Eight, 1120 Sangamon Ave. Springfield, IL 62702.
The family would like to express its appreciation to Memorial Hospice Care for the loving care and attention provided by all its staff. They wish especially to thank nurses Amy, Regina and Angie.
Visitation: 5-7 pm, Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home. A memorial service by the 8 & 40 will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral Service: 10 am, Monday, September 30, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Burton officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
