Mykennah Allen and Alexis Halbrook have advanced to the IHSA State Girls Tennis Tourney in Buffalo Grove, Thursday and Friday.
For the first time in school history Shelbyville is making plans for the state tennis tourney thanks to a 4th place doubles finish for Mykennah Allen and Alexis Halbrook.
Allen and Halbrook were seeded 4th started sectional with a bye. In the 2nd round they beat Casey-Westfield’s #1 doubles team (Gladu/Cox), 6-4, 6-1. They followed up, beating Robinson’s #1 doubles team (Fuller/Buchanan), 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. That win assured them of at least 4th place and a state berth.
On Saturday, Allen and Halbrook lost to #1 seed Kristen Doty and Kate Ervin(Mattoon), who went to state last year. Allen and Halbrook had recently beaten Doty and Ervin (33-3), at Shelbyville, 10-8. They then lost the 3rd place match to Kaiser and Stremming from Mattoon, 6-3, 7-5.
Ram coach Ryan Scott also took two singles players and another doubles team to sectional. Julia Bolinger and Kayla Lee competed in singles, but were eliminated. Kaitlyn Hopper and Rachel Sphar competed in doubles and were eliminated.
Allen and Halbrook are headed to state with a 17-6 record, with 3 of their 6 losses in their first four matches. They had a 14 match winning streak this season.
