SHELBYVILLE, IL. — The Shelby County Relay For Life came closer to its goal for 2011 as the year closed out on August 31.

The grand total topped the $54,000 mark, still falling a little short of the $57,500 goal.

“Shelby County did a fantastic job,” said American Cancer Society representative Lesa Brandt at Monday evening’s wrap-up meeting.

This year’s event included 20 teams, 75 survivors and 240 luminaria.

With the teams’ efforts and business sponsorship, Shelby County’s Relay event raised $54,147.71.

“We grew in sponsorship. There was a lot of community support,” Brandt said.

She also noted the increase in the number of teenagers involved in teams this year.

“We had a great event,” said co-chair Kathie Storm. “The teams did a great job.”

“The committee thanks the community for its support each year - that’s what makes it a great success,” she added.

Next year’s event is set for August 3-4 in Forest Park.  Committee planning meetings will begin in October.

“The committee welcomes new people to come help us. New people bring new ideas and new enthusiasm,” Storm said.

She added that it is not too early to form teams and begin fundraising for the 2012 event.
