SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Plans are being made for the 2011 American Cancer Society Relay for Life event and the committee is looking for volunteers.
“We need more people to assist the committee,” said co-chair Kathy Storm. “If you want to help contact us. You don’t have to head a committee, you can help other committee heads.”
Teams can register online at www.relayforlifeshelby.com and begin fundraising.
The theme for this year’s event is “Hope for Another Year of Holidays” and teams can use the holiday ideas in their fundraising efforts.
So far teams have raised over $4700 toward this year’s goal of $57,500.
“We’re off to a booming start,” said ACS representative Lesa Brandt. “We’re already up almost $2000 over (this time) last year.”
The committee is hoping to see at least 20 teams registered and participating in the event, which is set for August 5-6 in Forest Park.
Last year’s event raised $63,129. The goal was set at $55,000.
“Everybody gets more excited when we pass the goal,” Storm said.
“This is not just a Shelbyville event. We want teams from throughout the county,” Storm said.
Teams can be formed from the workplace, churches, or friends. Youth teams are also encouraged.
The Relay For Life event celebrates cancer survivors, remembers cancer victims, and educates all in cancer prevention. The event is a 12-hour overnight event that symbolizes a cancer patient’s walk from diagnosis to survivorship. The carnival-like atmosphere invites the general public to participate and encourage the teams in their fundraising efforts.
Entertainment from music to contests continues throughout the event to keep the teams’ and visitors’ spirits high.
Entertainment committee chairperson Chris Bogart is looking for local talent to help during the event.
“If you’ve got talent, we want you. Come help the American Cancer Society raise money at the 2011 Relay For Life, Aug. 5, in Shelbyville. If you can sing, dance, tell jokes, perform magic, you name it, we’re interested in you to entertain and raise money in the fight against cancer,” Bogart said.
Bogart may be contacted at 774-4283.
Team captains are encouraged to attend the first meeting on February 14, 6:30 p.m., at the Shelbyville Public Library. Monthly meetings will continue through July.
The 2011 Kick Off event is set for March 14. Teams are also encouraged to attend to receive information materials and have questions answered. Team registration may also be done that evening.
