More Teams Sought for Relay For Life Event

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — The Relay For Life of Shelby County will be held August 3, but it's not too late to register a team for the event.

“There's no cut off time to register a team,” said American Cancer Society representative Meaghan McDonagh.  “It's still only $25 to register a team.”

Eleven teams have registered for this year's event, down from recent years. However more than $15,000 has been raised toward this year's goal.

“We're down on the number of teams drastically. Many of the teams not participating this year were huge fundraising teams. The teams we have will have to work harder,” said committee co-chair Jodi Boys.

Teams may continue to register online at www.relayforlife.org/ShelbyIL or contact team recruitment co-chairs Jodi Boys, 217-412-9226, or Rachel Stewardson, 217-254-6036.

The Relay for Life event is a 12-hour overnight event that simulates a cancer patient's journey from diagnosis to recovery . During the event teams continue to fundraise for the American Cancer Society, walk a designated track, and remember those who are fighting the disease or who have lost the fight.

The Survivor dinner will be held at 5 p.m. with registration beginning at 4:30 p.m. Invitations will be mailed soon and RSVPs are due by July 13. Menu includes hamburgers and hot dogs, baked beans, potato chips, and watermelon. The meat is donated by  Wade's Meats and cooked by the Shelbyville Fire Department. The ladies auxiliary will help with serving.

Those who wish to be included in the survivor dinner may contact Debbie Hammond at 774-1345, leave a message.

“There are lots of people not on our lists,” Hammond said. “Please contact us so we can include you.”

Also newly diagnosed patients are encouraged to contact the American Cancer Society to get connected with programs and services offered.

“Even though you may have insurance, there are programs that are free to patients such as the wig bank program,” said Lawrence Underwood of the ACS office.

Activites for the public continue through the evening hours, including entertainment, basket auctions, and Kids Korner. Survivors are also honored with a special dinner and a victory lap.

Teams are planning activities such as soda ring toss, face painting, kid favors, glow sticks, rubber wristbands, 3-on-3  basketball tournament. Other teams will offer foods such as hot dogs any way you want them, BBQ sandwiches, sausage sandwiches. Fleenor's Weiners, cotton candy, sno cones, popcorn, chips, drinks.
