SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
With 19 teams registered and over $8,000 raised, the Relay for Life of Shelby County is off to a big start for the 2011event.
The kickoff event was held Monday evening at the Senior Center in Forest Park. Teams who attended received information about this year’s event, which will be held in August 5-6 in Forest Park.
The goal for this year is $57,500.
“We have one team who has raised about $5,000 so far,” said Lesa Brandt, Eastern Illinois Region American Cancer Society representative. “Shelby Memorial Hospital is already at Silver level ($3500) and is closing in on Gold ($5000).”
Since 1996, Relay For Life of Shelby County has raised approximately $500,000. Over $67,000 was raised in last year’s event and over $68,000 was raised in 2009.
Team registrations are still ongoing at www.relayforlifeshelby.com with registration fee remaining at $25.
“We would still like to have more teams. Our goal is 20 teams and we’re real close to that,” said county co-chairperson Kathy Storm.
“Our Relay is successful because of the work the teams do and the donations from the county,” Storm said.
She added that several youth teams from schools and churches are registered.
“I hope this encourages more youth teams throughout the county,” Storm said.
Other teams are comprised of co-workers, friends, church groups, and clubs.
Teams are already planning fundraisers from bake sales and cookouts to carnivals and golf outings in an effort to once again surpass the goal.
The Relay For Life event celebrates cancer survivors, remembers cancer victims, and educates all in cancer prevention. The event is a 12-hour overnight event that symbolizes a cancer patient’s walk from diagnosis to survivorship. The carnival-like atmosphere invites the general public to participate and encourages the teams in their fundraising efforts.
Reasons for participating also vary. Teams may be working together in memory of a friend or family member who have lost the battle with cancer. Others participate to support friends and family who are currently fighting cancer. Still others just believe in the work of the American Cancer Society.
