Shelby County Jr Legion baseball split an appearance at the Greenville round robin almost two weeks ago. They lost a nail-biter to Post 210 Gold out of Danville, 3-2, but then came back get a lead against Jerseyville and hang on, 5-3.
The first game was a defensive duel into the 6th inning. Payton Bryant threw for Shelby Legion and went 6 and 2/3 innings, giving up just 3 runs in one inning, allowing 9 hits and one walk, while striking out 2.
Shelby defenders made 19 of the 21 put outs with no errors. They turned two double plays.
Danville's pitcher, Ruch, went 6 and 1/3 innings, giving up two 1-run innings on just 2 hits, 3 walks, and 4 Ks. His defense booted the ball 3 times to make the game interesting. They turned no double plays.
Shelby turned a double play in the 1st inning after the 2nd batter hit a 1-out single. Trey Ruot scooped a ball at 2nd and turned two at 1st. Shelby went in order in the 1st. Danville went in order in the 2nd with Bryant's 1st K.
Camden Coleman drew a lead-off walk in the Shelby 2nd, but was left on. Danville went in order in the 3rd with Bryant's second K. Ruot led off with a single in the 3rd and was sacrificed by Trent Moore to 2nd, being the first batter of the game to reach 2nd base. He was stranded.
Danville got a lead off single in the 4th and a follow-up single. With runners at 1st and 2nd and no outs, Ruot turned his second double play of the game. The lead runner made 3rd, but Bryant threw the next batter out from the mound to 1st to keep the game scoreless.
Shelby also got two men on in their 4th. Sam Hagerman led off with a walk. Coleman hit a fielder's choice. With two outs, Hunter Reed reached on an error and Coleman went to 2nd. They were left on.
Danville got two singles in the 5th, but Coleman made a play, 3rd to 1sdt, Ruot made a play, 2nd to 1st, and Bryant snared a line drive. Shelby went in order in the 5th.
Danville got to Bryant in the 6th. Two consecutive singles preceded an RBI-double, 1-0. A sac bunt got another run home, 2-0. Dalton McGill made a play at short, but then next batter doubled to make it 3-0.
Shelby got one run back in their 6th. McGill led off with a walk and Sam Hagerman singled. Coleman hit a fielder's choice that got Hagerman at 2nd, but McGill scored, 3-1.
After two ground outs in the Alton 7th, Bryant walked a batter and a hit a man. Eli Hagerman came in and walked a batter to load the bases with 2 outs. Hagerman got out of the jam with a K.
Errors came into play in the bottom of the 7th. With one out, Ruot reached on an error and Moore reached on an error. A wild pitch put the tying unearned runs at 2nd and 3rd with one out. Ruot scored on a ground out to make it a 1-run game, 3-2. With Moore, the tying run, at 3rd, the next batter swung and missed strike 3 to take the loss.
Sam Hagerman and Trey Ruot had the only two hits for Shelby. Danville out-hit Shelby 9 to 2, but barely won with the tying run sitting at 3rd base.

Shelby rattled the bats in game 2. They out-hit Jerseyville 9 to 6 and gvae up just one error, while J'ville booted the ball 3 times.
Camden Coleman bent but did not break on the mound. He got the win, going 4 innings with 3 runs 5 hits and 4 walks, while striking out 6. Trent Moore came in and closed the lid on Jerseyville, throwing 3 scoreless innings with just one hit and striking out 3.
Jerseyville drew first bood, but then got bloody. Coleman KO'd the first batter he faced, but then gave up a single, a double, and a single. Down 2-0 in a hurry, he responded with a dropped 3rd K that AJ Stokes threw to 1st for the out. Sam Hagerman made a 3-unassisted play at 1st to end bring Shelby to the plate.
Stokes led off with a single and McGill reached on an error, sending Stokes home from 1st base, 2-1. Sam Hagerman singled McGill home for the tie, 2-2. With one out, Isaac Walked singled and Colten Reed singled Hagerman home for the lead. A DP ended the rally with Shelby up 3-2.
Coleman Rang up a batter and walked two batters in the 2nd, but allowed no scores. Shelby doubled down in the 2nd.
With one out, Eli Hagerman singled. With two outs, McGill doubled Eli home, 4-2. Sam Hagerman made it back-to-back doubles, driving McGill in, 5-2. Shelby had 5 unanswered runs in 2 innings.
Jerseyville got one run back in the 3rd. After Coleman snared a line drive for the 1st out, he gave up a walk. He KO'd a batter, then walked another. A single made it 5-3, then Coleman KO'd the 3rd out.
Both teams ran out of ammo at that point. No one scored over the next 4 innings as the game withered away.
Six Shelby batters hit safely and three had multiple hits. AJ Stokes hit 2-for-4 in the lead-off slot with a run. Sam hagerman was 2-for-3 with a double, a run, and two RBIs. Colten Reed was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Dalton McGill was 1-for-4 with a double and two scores.
Counting the Jerseyville win, Shelby has won 8 of the last 9 games to go to 15-4. They play a doubleheader on Sunday, July 15 at Mattoon starting at 1 p.m.
