Shelby Legion traveled to Champaign on Tuesday for a 9-inning game. Shelby was effervescent early, then had to cork Champaign late for the win, 11-7.

Shelby pounded 10 hits in the game. Six batter hit safely and four had multiple hits, two had extra-base hits. 

Right off the bat, Shelby set the tone. Shelby smacked 4 hits and sent 9 batters to the plate in the 1st. Hunter Reed led off the game with a single. Rece Pullen walked to put two men on. Dalton McGill scalded a 2-run triple, 2-0.

Sam Hagerman lifted a sac fly and McGill tagged and scored. Camden Coleman singled, Colten Reed walked and Isaac Walk reached on an error, scoring Coleman, 4-0. With two outs, Trent Moore singled in a run. Moore stole 2nd and Walked took home, 6-0.

Champaign got two runs back in the bottom of the 1st. A lead-off walk and a double compromised Shelby starter Colten Reed. A ground out and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out.

A walk forced in a run, 6-1. A wild pitch made it 6-2. Reed threw a K and then Moore caught a fly in center for the 3rd out.

Shelby got a run back in the 2nd. With two outs, McGill singled and stole 2nd. Sam Hagerman singled and McGill scored, 7-2. Champaign got a single in the 2nd, but no runs. Shelby went in order in the 3rd.

Champaign got a hit batter in the 3rd, but again no runs. Moore walked in the Shelby 4th, but was stranded. Champaign got a lead-off single in the 4th, but no runs.

The Shelby 5th got them insurance runs. Sam Hagerman walked with one out. Camden Coleman smacked a double and AJ Stokes walked to load the bases. Isaac Walk hit a 2-run single, scoring Hagerman and pinch runner Trey Ruot, 9-2.

Champaign chipped away in the 5th. A Shelby error put a man on. A sac bunt and a single led to a score, 9-3. Another error made it 9-4. Moore singled in the 6th and Eli Hagerman walked, but they were left on.

Champaign chipped away again in the 7th. Reliever Hunter Reed threw 2 Ks. then walked a batter. Three consecutive singles made it 9-7. Reed then KO'd the 3rd out to hold on to the 2-run lead.

Camden Coleman walked in the Shelby 7th but was stranded. Champaign went in order in the 7th with another Reed K. In the Shelby 8th, Moore reached on an error and Eli Hagerman walked. Hunter Reed walked to load the bases.

Rece Pullen laid down a sacrifice bunt and Moore scored. McGill was intentionally walked to load the bases again. Sam Hagerman singled and scored his brother Eli, 11-7.

In the Champaign 8th, consecutive singles got nothing. With two on and no outs, Hunter Reed struck out two consecutive batters. A ground out killed the budding rally. Stokes walked in the 9th, but was out stealing as Shelby went in order. 

Champaign was down to their last inning. A lead-off walk was followed by Moore snagging a line drive in center field. A batter was hit by a pitch. A pop up to Reed was caught off the mound. McGill corked Champaign on a ground ball, 3rd to 1st for the win.

McGill led Shelby in hitting, going 2-for-4 with a triple, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Sam Hagerman hit 2-for-3 with a score and drove in 3 runs on a sac fly and two RBI-singles. Trent Moore was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Camden Coleman was 2-for-4 with a double.

Shelby Legion (15-4) is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Mattoon on Sunday.
