George Huntington returned from the World Horseshoe Tournament and ran the table at Shelbyville Horseshoe Club on Thursday, 10-0.
Huntington was the World Tournament Elders Class B Champion at the end of July in Utah. He went 13-2 to win his class, then returned to go undefeated at SHC on a night with a field of 11 pitchers in Class A. The 12th man, or woman in this case, Dorothy Hack was absent due to injury. Hack was injured by a horseshoe last week that ricocheted and hit her in the foot. She should return in a few weeks.
Dale Westendorf, who finished 4th in the state in Class A last year (56.65%), also pitched at SHC on Thursday. But, it was Lloyd Ruff, last week’s SHC winner and the Class B 4th place pitcher in state last year (40.71%), that captured runner-up honors.
Ruff went 9-2 with 13 points in loss. Westendorf went 8-2 with 10 points in loss. Ruff lost the first match of the night then went 9-1, winning the final six matches in a row. Westendorf won his first six matches of the night, before dropping two of the next four.
Lloyd Allen went 7-4 to capture 4th place with 42 points in loss. Patty Doty, the winner of Class B the last two weeks with 10 straight wins, placed 5th in the Class A event. Doty went 5-5 with 31 points in loss. She still finished ahead of the rest of the Class B pitchers.
Brad Phegley followed in 6th, going 5-6 with 32 points in loss. Pete Rankin went 4-5 with 43 points in loss to be 7th, while Roy Franklin was 4-6 with 53 points in loss to place 8th.
The Shelbyville Horseshoe Club pitches weekly tournaments every Thursday night beginning about 7 p.m. at their courts across the railroad tracks from the corner of North 12th Street and North Morgan in Shelbyville. Local guests and visitors to Lake Shelbyville are welcome.
