JFL Heavies 5-1, Tied In Title Hunt

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — The Shelbyville JFL Heavyweights (5-1) have had a banner season and are still in the title hunt with three recent wins

The Ram beat Monticello at home, 47-25

“Monticello lead 13-6 after the first quarter,” Coach Matt Cloe reported. “They led 19-12 at the half. We led 35-25 after the 3rd.”

The Rams scored twice in the 4th and pulled away. That win put the Rams at 4-0 tied for 1st with Maroa in the conference.

Keaton Plummer had 194 yards rushing on 11 carries, and 4 touchdowns. Justin Hopper had 87 yards rushing on 16 carries, and 2 touchdowns. Turner Pullen was 4 for 11 passing and threw for 107 yards. Brett Spears had a 41 yard touchdown, as well. Shelby had 409 total yards of offense (302 rushing/107 passing).  Dillon Birch led in tackles with 7 (1 for loss), Gottfriedt had 5 (3 for loss), and Peterson had 5 (1 for loss).

Against St. Teresa at home the Rams pulled lost a 1-point game, 25-24.

“We were down 7-0 after 1,” Coach Cloe said. “We were down 14-12 at half. We were down 20-18 after the 3rd. We took the lead 24-19 with 3:24 left in the game. They scored with about 1:30 left in the game to take the final lead and they won 25-24. That dropped us behind Maroa and tied with Tolono for 2nd in the conference standings.”

Shelbyville then had a chance to upset Maroa and did it in Maroa, 30-27.

“We were ahead 12-6 after the first quarter. We were ahead 18-14 at the half. They were ahead 27-24 after the 3rd.  We scored with 15.1 seconds left in the game to take the lead 30-27. There were actually 4 lead changes in the game.”

Some of the key plays in the game are described by Coach Cloe.

“Tylr Gottfriedt caught a 17 yard pass on a fourth and 7 late in the 4th quarter, when we were down 27-24. Justin Hopper scored from 2 yards out with 15.1 seconds left in the game to take the lead. Maroa threw a Hail Mary pass where our cornerback and strong safety collided going for the ball. The ball tipped off of our cornerbacks hands and fell into the hands of the Maroa receiver.

“He took off down their sideline heading for the end zone and Hunter Plummer came from across the opposite side of the field to tackle the reciever at the 6 yard line as the clock ran out. That was literally a game saving tackle! Our kids stormed the field and swarmed Hunter for making the tackle. That put us back in a tie for first place in the conference standings with Tolono and Maroa.

We played for the title again in 2008, but got beat by Monticello by a score of 42-28.  That was our current group of seniors!”
