SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Shelbyville (4-2) football started 0-2, but after four straight wins can be playoff eligible if they beat Sullivan-Okaw Valley (1-5) in Shelbyville on Friday.

Ram coach Stan Wienke talked about the Rams 4th straight win last Friday against a gritty Clinton squad (1-5).

“We didn’t play as good as we did the last three games, but they (Clinton) had something to do with that,” Coach Wienke said. “They blitzed two or three players every play and it was hard to pass block. So we ran the ball and they blitzed themselves out of position. The kids did a great job running.”

Clinton has probably the best running game for a team with a losing record. They put up huge numbers against the Rams, but the Rams just out-scored them.

What about SOV on Friday?

“We don’t know much about SOV,” Coach Wienke said. “The only film we have is the one we traded with them. They are very athletic, similar to what we are.”

They will spread out 3 or 4 wide, but lean more to the run than we will.”

Like the Rams, whose key is quarterback Tucker Schwengel, the key to SOV's offense is their quarterback Nick Frerichs.

Frerichs is SOV's leading rusher (324 yards, 1 TD) for 3.9 yards per carry. Frerichs has also completed 65 of 135 passes for 678 yards. SOV has rushed for 793 yards and five TDs. Frerichs and Andy Brown (1-for-2) have passed for 704 yards and five TDs.

Jacob Vail is the second leading rusher for SOV with 292 yards (7.1 yds/carry) and 3 TDs. Caden May has 87 yards on 35 carries (2.5 yds/carry).

SOV's leading receiver is Andy Brown with 27 receptions for 277 yards (10.1 yds/catch) and two TDs. May is second with 12 catches for 95 yards (7.9 yds/catch) and 2 TDs. Wyatt Garriott has seven catches for 128 yards (18 yds/catch). SOV has had 10 different receivers catch 65 passes.

Brown has scored 22 points, Vail 18 points, May 12, Joe Jeffers 12, Frerichs 6 and Will Craig 6.

Jeffers is the big kick-return man. He has 18 returns for 319 yards (17.7 yds/return). Brown leads the punt returners with five returns for 29 yards (5.8 per return).

Defensively, Jeffers is also the leading tackler with 59. Bailey Matheson has 55 tackles, Will Craig has 39, Walker Byers 37 and Levi Nadler 31. Kainan Bushert and Matheson have one blocked kick, each. Craig has a block return for a 43-yard TD.

However, in the takeaway department. SOV is -5 for the season. They have two interceptions and six fumble recoveries and an onside kick recovery (+9). However, they have thrown seven interceptions and lost seven fumbles (-14).

Kyle Drury and Matheson had two fumble recoveries, each. Jeffers and May have one interception, each.
