Strike 3 For Shelby

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Three up, three down for Shelbyville so far at the Vandalia Holiday Tourney. They lost to Vandalia and St. Anthony on day 1. On day 2, they lost to Altamont, 46-39.

It was a defensive battle, but in the 2nd period, Altamont broke free for a 20-9 run and that was the difference in the ball game.

Shelby led a low-scoring 1st just 6-2. Then the bottom fell out as they lost the lead and fell behind by seven at the half, 22-15. Shelby shot just 42% in the 1st half, while Altamont actually shot worse (38%), mostly from the 1st period.

After the break, The game settled into an even match, not a good things for the Rams, who trailed. Altamont upped their lead to nine points in a game, where every basket was a premium.

Heading into the crunch time Shelby trailed 34-25. Shelby managed to out-score Altamont in the 4th period, but only enough to still lose by seven.

Shelbyville shot 20 3-pointers, but could only make three, making just 15%. They only got to the line for five free throws and made just two.

Even though the Rams out-rebounded Altamont 30 to 23, the rams also turned the ball over seven times more (15 to 8). Erase the 2nd period Altamont run and the Rams were in position to win. But, you can't erase the 2nd, you have to overcome it and the Rams couldn't.

Altamont shot just eight treys and made just two, but the got to the line for 12 shots and made six, erasing the Ram edge from outside. In the 2nd half, Altamont shot over 50% inside the arc. Shelby shot just 42% and the arc was no saviour, nor the charity stripe.

Ziegler led all players with 19 points, scoring eight times from the floor, including one triple and 2-of-2 at the line. Cwenton Williams was the only Ram sin double-digits, scoring 13 points, all inside the arc, plus 1-of-2 at the line. Williams almost had a double-double, leading the Rams with eight boards.
