Rams Finish With A Win

JOHN CURTIS - Daily Union Sports Editor

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Before the Vandalia Holiday Tournament hit the Rams in the bottom on their way out, Monday, Shelbyville got in the win column. They claimed 9th place by taking their frustration out on South Central, 70-39.

Out of the gate the Rams charged over top of the Cougars with a 22-10 run. They doubled down in the 2nd period with a 30-9 run, to lead by 33 points at the break, 52-19.

Through the 1st half, Shelby had just seven turnovers and 20 boards. South Central had 16 turnovers and just 11 rebounds. Shelby shot 67% from the arc and 44% inside the 3-point line. The Cougars shot 50% inside, butmissed six treys.

Rather than continuing to kick the Cougar carcass, the Rams pulled in their horns and cruised to the final buzzer, still winning by 31.

One big difference in the game was that the Rams connected from the arc. After shooting horribly from distance for the first four losses in the tourney, the Rams shot 67% from the arc in the 1st half and 52% for the game. They scored 36 of their 70 points from artillery range.

Drennian Martin was the arc angel launching a sorie of eight 3-pointers and making seven of them. He led the Rams with a game-high 23 points.

Reserve guard Zach Williams followed in double figures with 12 points, recording his own trey hat trick. Those two shooters accounted for 10 of the 12 Ram triples and half of the Ram points (35).

The Ram post scoring was minimal. Luke McConnell had just two buckets, Bart Kennell had one, and Cwenton Williams had none. They only accounted for nine of the 70 points, but grabbed 12 of the 29 boards.

Ram reserves, including Zach Williams, got a lot of playing time, scoring 30 of the Ram points.

Another lopsideded part of the game was rebounds. Shelbyville out-rebounded South Central 29 to 18. Turnovers were also key. Shelbyville lost the turnover battle in their four losses. They had just 12 turnovers in this game, while South Central booted the ball 23 times.

Eleven less rebounds and 11 more turnovers is a lot fewer possessions (22) than the Rams. The Cougars were also 0-for-6 from the arc.

Because of the big lead, Shelbyville fielded all 15 of their players and 12 of them scored. South Central had half as many players score.

South Central was led by Langley with 13 points and two players followed with seven points, Ross and Harmeier.

South Central had an advantage from the line, making 13-of-22 for the game (54%), while Shelby was 8-of-15 (57%). The Rams committed almost twice as many fouls, 19 to 10.
