SHELBYVILLE, IL. — The Shelbyville 8th grade was in control throughout three quarters on Thursday, then had to escape a St. Anthony comeback by the skin of their teeth, 26-24.

Shelby opened with an 8-0 run. Turner Pullen scored twice from the floor, Tylr Gottfriedt once and Cade Watson once.

In the 2nd, St. Anthony adjusted and played the Rams a smidge more than even, 8 to 7, and cutting the lead by a point. Pullen Payton Howell and Gottfriedt had solo scores and Mason Cameron split a pair at the line.

St. Anthony got a pair of treys from their leading scorer in the game, Deters. Beesley added a two and Shelby was up by seven at the break, 15-8.

The 3rd was another run out by the Rams, outscoring St. A on an 8-2 run. Pullen scored all eight of the Ram points. He scored twice from the floor and one of those he converted to a 3-point play. He got to the line two more times and made 3-of-4.

St. A had just one 2-pointer and trailed by 13 points, 23-10, heading into what looked to be a cruise to a win. Not so.

The Rams failed to score from the floor in the final period, while St. A scored six times. Shelby got all of their final points, just enough for the win, at the line. Mason Cameron made both ends of a 1-and-1, then missed two more front ends of 1-and-1s. Gottfriedt made 1-of-2 foul shots.

St. Anthony got a trey from Walsh, a trey and a deuce from Deters, two scores from Nuxoll, and a two from Utz. They scored six times from the floor. They missed two free throws and that was the margin of the Ram victory.

Pullen had a game-high 14 points, including 4-of-5 at the line, all in the first three quarters. Tyler Gottfriedt followed with five points.

Deters led St. A with 11 points, with a trey hat trick for 9-of-the-11. Beesley and Nuxoll followed with four points, each.
