The Daily Union Athletes of the Week both eclipsed the 30-point mark this past week.
Colton Burrus of Cowden-Herrick basketball scored a career-high and area season-high 37 points in a game against Mulberry Grove. Burrus was the Hornet leading scorer who broke loose after being subordinated in recent games. Burrus scored 12 times from the floor in the 2-point overtime loss, 65-63.
Burrus scored nine times in close and recorded a 3-point hat trick. Burrus was also scintillating at the free throw line. He sank 10-of-12 shots at the stripe. Burrus shot 60% from the floor, including 3-point shots (38%). He shot 75% from 2-point range. He also shot 83% from the line.
Burrus also led the team with four steals and grabbed seven rebounds. He dished one assist and had just two turnovers.
Brandon Helmuth of Stew-Stras basketball, one of the area’s leading scorers, put up a career-high 33 points in a loss to Pana, 87-71.
Helmuth scored 13 times from the floor. Helmuth scored a dozen times from in close and added one trey. Helmuth also got to the line for nine foul shots and buried six of the free throws (67%).
