SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Shelbyville volleyball had to face one of the best teams in the conference on Thursday. The Rams competed, but couldn’t tip the scales in their favor, losing 21-25, 23-25.
“This was a hard fought match,” said Ram coach Lisa Peifer. “We knew going in that this was going to be a tough one against the Trojans. Our defense really stepped it up. We had a lot of fire, but didn’t come out on top.”
The Rams had 20 kills and 7 blocks in two games. They had 27 digs.
Libero Sammy Hendrix led the Shelby defense with nine digs, while Alissa Hudson stepped up her defense to get seven digs.
Brooke Eisenbarth led the hit crew with six kills and a block (7 net points).
“Brooke Eisenbarth played very well, passing and taking aggressive swings at the ball,” Coach Peifer said. “All in all, it was a fun match to watch.”
Sophomore Madison Boone, who had five kills and three blocks (8 net points), and Taylor Wilcox, who had five kills and a block (6 net points). Brandy Smith also had two blocks.
Smith and Maggie Bosgraaf led the Rams at the line with 10 points each. Smith had two aces. Bosgraaf dished 15 assists towards the 20 kills.
Shelbyville varsity (14-13, 5-4 Okaw), JV (10-3, 7-2 Okaw), and fresh-soph (8-6-3, 3-3-1 Okaw) all play at Tuscola Tuesday, starting at 5 p.m.

In the JV match, Shelby suffered the same fate, losing 18-25, 19-25.

In the fresh-soph prelim, Shelby won a close 2-game set, 15-12, 15-12.
“We came out a little stronger and did a good job of being aggressively and taking it to Maroa early on,” said Ram fresh-soph coach Brittany Pierce. “Our defense was a little sluggish at times, but we got through it. These girls have just one match and one tournament left to play this season.”
The fresh-soph were led by the serving of Elly Oldham, who served up 13 points and two aces. Courtney Williams also had a good run with eight points and one ace. She also led the team with four of the eight assists towards the eight team kills (100%).
Blair Johnton led the Ram defense with eight of the 28 digs from 10 different defenders. Isabel Leach had three of the eight assists and six of the digs.
