WRams conquer PORTA

Shelbyville wrestling pulled off a coup at the 17-team Petersburg PORTA tourney Saturday claiming the team title by beating 3rd-ranked PORTA by 38 points.

“We knew we had an outside chance going in,” said Ram coach Greg Harkins. “PORTA was going to be our biggest competition.”

Shelbyville scored 237.5 points. PORTA was 2nd with 199.5 points. Okaw Valley Conference rival Argenta took 4th (155.5), while formerly-ranked Litchfield (beaten by Shelby on opening night), placed 5th (148).

“We talked about it before we went,” Coach Harkins said. “Those who were expected to be in the finals, need to be there. What got us the team win was other guys who weren’t suppose to be in the finals making upsets and getting to the finals and scoring points they weren’t suppose to.”

Shelbyville placed in 12 of the 14 weight classes. Shelby had two 1sts, six 2nds, a 3rd, two 4ths and a 6th.

Adam Hudson (152) and Lucas Duckett (170) won titles. Zack Stirrett (106), Garrett Brachbill (126), Jarred Hicks (132), Jared Finley (138), Wyatt Fox (145), and Elliott Smithson claimed runner-up honors. Caleb Cloe (182) placed 3rd and Noah Applegate (195) and Andrew Mudgette (285) scored 4th place finishes. Trevor Brown (120) placed 6th.

“At 132 pounds, Jarred Hicks was not expected to make it to finals, but he was one of those who did it,” Coach Harkins said. “At 182 pounds, Caleb Cloe got upsets and made it to the 3rd place match and won.”

Hicks had two major decisions for eight more points. Cloe won three matches with a fall, a major decision and a decisions for 3rd place, 13 team points.

At 195 pounds, Noah Applegate wasn’t expected to win a match. He only weighs 175 pounds and is wrestling 195. We told him if you win one match that’s three more points for the team. He got to the 3rd place match and finished 4th.”
