---- — Shelbyville wrestling pulled off a coup at the 17-team Petersburg PORTA tourney Saturday claiming the team title by beating 3rd-ranked PORTA by 38 points.

“We knew we had an outside chance going in,” said Ram coach Greg Harkins. “PORTA was going to be our biggest competition.”

Shelbyville scored 237.5 points. PORTA was 2nd with 199.5 points. Okaw Valley Conference rival Argenta took 4th (155.5), while formerly-ranked Litchfield (beaten by Shelby on opening night), placed 5th (148).

“We talked about it before we went,” Coach Harkins said. “Those who were expected to be in the finals, need to be there. What got us the team win was other guys who weren’t suppose to be in the finals making upsets and getting to the finals and scoring points they weren’t suppose to.”

Shelbyville placed in 12 of the 14 weight classes. Shelby had two 1sts, six 2nds, a 3rd, two 4ths and a 6th.

Adam Hudson (152) and Lucas Duckett (170) won titles. Zack Stirrett (106), Garrett Brachbill (126), Jarred Hicks (132), Jared Finley (138), Wyatt Fox (145), and Elliott Smithson claimed runner-up honors. Caleb Cloe (182) placed 3rd and Noah Applegate (195) and Andrew Mudgette (285) scored 4th place finishes. Trevor Brown (120) placed 6th.

“At 132 pounds, Jarred Hicks was not expected to make it to finals, but he was one of those who did it,” Coach Harkins said. “At 182 pounds, Caleb Cloe got upsets and made it to the 3rd place match and won.”

Hicks had two major decisions for eight more points. Cloe won three matches with a fall, a major decision and a decisions for 3rd place, 13 team points.

At 195 pounds, Noah Applegate wasn’t expected to win a match. He only weighs 175 pounds and is wrestling 195. We told him if you win one match that’s three more points for the team. He got to the 3rd place match and finished 4th.”

Applegate earned six points for the Rams with two wins.

“At 106 pounds, Zack Stirrett was not expected to be in the championship match, but he got there,” Harkins said. Some of these guys were expected to maybe make it to the 5th-6th matches, but they got upsets.

Stirrett won by fall and decision for 9 points.

Coach Harkins was also impressed with the two Ram champs, Adam Hudson and Lucas Duckett.

“Luicas Duckett had a nail-biter in the final with a kid from Litchfield who was ranked 3rd in the state,” Harkins said. “But Duckett wrestled our way, ‘attack,’ attack,’ ‘attack.’ He rode him well. Hudson also wrestled a kid from Litchfield in the final. He wrestled him on opening night and won 1-0. We studied film and saw some things we could do and get him turned on his back. Hudson got a 1-0 lead, then got it to a 5-0 lead. He got a take down and it was 7-0, three weeks after he won 1-0.

“It is a credit to these kids how they have improved,” Harkins said. “After practice, when they are tired and hungry, they stay and watch film and put in the extra hours to put themselves on top.”

Shelbyville , ranked 6th in the state prior to the PORTA win, heads to the Cumberland Tourney this Saturday. One of the team goals, which the captains and the team have set is to win the Cumberland Tourney. They already earned another goal, a PORTA trophy, and 1st at that.
