Heyworth Knocks Out Okaw

Okaw Valley girls basketball hasn’t had such a good start to a season in a long time. That is until their own holiday tournament. Blue Ridge (#5) knocked Okaw (#4) into the consolation bracket in their first game. They bounced back with a consolation win over Mt. Pulaski, but then were knocked out in the consolation semifinal by Heyworth, 49-33, hey!

Heyworth came in as the 10th seed and lost right away to Chrisman (#7). Hey worth then knocked Shelbyville out in the consolation bracket. On the day before, the day before Christmas, Heyworth kept their holiday roll on by giving Okaw a body blow in the middle quarters and holding on for the win.

It was even Steven in the 1st period with Heyworth leading just 12-11 after one. Then Heyworth clamped down on the Okaw scorers. Okaw was blitzed 14-2 in the 2nd period and was down by 13 at the half, 26-13.

Okaw was doubled-up to start the 3rd and it just went from bad to worse. Heyworth had a 15-4 run in the 3rd and was down by 24 facing the final frame, 41-17.

Okaw pushed down the stretch with a 16-8 finish, but the hole was too deep. They cut the margin to 16 points, but that was as good as they could do.

Heyworth squeezed the Okaw scorers, but Amanda McClain squirted free to lead Okaw with 14 points all from the field. McClain followed up her 12 point performance in the win over Mt. Pulaski early Monday morning with the team-high in the matinee, giving her 26 points on Monday.

Paige Harlin and Amy Orris were held to just five points each. They had one one 3-pointer, each. Harlin was just 1-of-6 from the arc and Orris 1-of-5. Abigail Weybright was held to just three points and was 0-of-2 from the arc. Okaw was even limited at the line, shooting just four free throws, making three.
