Rams Return to Duals

The undefeated, 5th-ranked, Shelbyville Ram wrestling program, who scored a 4th place finish last year, heads back to the Thomas More Super Duals to be held at the University of Illinois on Friday and Saturday.

This year, Shelbyville is perfect in dual meets and has won both tournaments they have competed in, the PORTA tourney and the Cumberland Skull & Crossbones tourney.

Last year, the Rams won their pool undefeated and that vaulted them into the championship round. Their pool title gave them a 1st round bye in the championship round. They then took on Oregon and won big, 48-27. That put them in the quarterfinal against Litchfield and they knocked off their Central Illinois rival, just 36-30.

That’s when the Rams ran into the glass ceiling in the super event with super teams from all over the state. In the semifinal Wilmington was in control, winning 49-12. Shelby went to the 3rd place match to face Mercer County and lost 50-24.

Last year, Shelbyville came out of nowhere as a team threat in the super duals against the best from around the state. This year they will be marked and the bar has been set higher for the Rams for the super duals this year.

Adam Hudson and Garrett Brachbill both went a perfect 8-0 in the 2-day tourney last year. Elliott Smithson was perfect in pool competition. Mitch Barna was 2-0.

Jared Finley and Wyatt Fox were 3-1 won in the pool, as were Lucas Duckett and Josh Hicks. Mike Ulrich was 3-0 with two forfeits and a decision.

Hudson and Brachbill were both 4-0 in the championship rounds. Hudson had one pin and Brachbill two, with an OT win. Duckett (7-1) won all four championship bouts. His only loss at the Super Duals was a 3-2 decision. Smithson finished 6-2, as did Fox. Finley finished 5-3.

This year heading in to the Super Duals, Shelby has eight state ranked wrestlers. Zack Stirrett is ranked 8th in the state at 106. Garrett Brachbill is ranked 4th at 126. Jarred Hicks is a state honorable mention at 132. Jared Finley is ranked 4th at 138. Wyatt Fox is ranked 8th at 145 and Adam Hudson 6th at 152. Lucas Duckett is ranked 3rd at 170 and Elliott Smithson is ranked 8th at 220.
