Comets cap tourney beating Devils

Stew-Stras lost to Arthur in the Tri-County Holiday Tourney, then to Hutsonville-Palestine, 64-56, in OT, and to Tri-County, 59-43. They capped the tourney facing off against rival Windsor and winning in double-overtime, 78-71.

This year the Comets and the Devils went to overtime in the first match-up, with Stew-Stras winning at home, 72-69. The Devils then escaped OT in their win at home against the Comets, 49-47. No surprise the latest match-up would be close.

It was a 14-14 tie after the 1st period. Mark Jones canned two 3-pointers, and Brandon Helmuth and Bryse Bugger scored twice. Mitch Haddock matched Jones with two treys of his own. Nic Hutchinson had one, while Hayden Cole had a bucket and a free throw and Spencer Blackburn scored.

Stew-Stras was up 29-27 at the half. Helmuth was 3-of-4 at the line and had a 3-point play. Bugger scored twice, again. Chandler Ballinger had a trey and Jones a two. Rylan Ard scored and made 2-of-4 foul shots. Warner had a deuce and a trey and Cole and Blackburn scored.

Windsor had a 23-16 run in the 3rd and took a 5-point lead, 50-45. Warner exploded for 15 points, scoring five times from the floor, including a 3-point play, and made 4-of-4 at the line. Haddock completed his trey hat trick, Allen was 1-of-2 at the line and a had a bucket, as did Cole.

Stew-Stras got 3-point plays from Rincker and Helmuth and a third trey from Jones. Helmuth, Bugger, and Fry scored and Helmuth added 1-of-2 at the line.

Stew-Stras knotted the score at the end of regulation, 61-61. Fry scored three times and made two free throws. Helmuth had another 3-point play, plus a free throw and a deuce. Bugger had a two. Allen and Warner scored twice and Allen made 3-of-4 free throws.
