Shelby Swept By Mattoon

SHELBYVILLE, IL. —

The Lady Ram volleyball team (1-2) was coming off a home win, but they ran into a buzz saw at Mattoon (1-0), Thursday, being swept at every level. Shelbyville varsity lost, 25-16, 25-10. The JV lost and the fresh-soph lost, 25-22, 25-13.

“No a lot of things to say about this match,” said Ram coach Lisa Peifer. “We knew going in that Mattoon would be big, strong and fast, but didn't seem to be able to adjust it. We had a couple of good things in the form of running some stuff with Madison Boone, who was the biggest offensive threat for us. Again, unforced errors set the tone to start and we never recovered. It was a rough night. These kids are each giving 100%, individually, but it's not transferring to be a better team.

The Rams couldn't muster any offense or defense. They had just five kills, five assists, and four digs. They got three aces from Courtney Williams with her team-high seven points. The best thing they did was record six blocks. Boone had three kills and three blocks for a positive contribution.

Shelbyville varsity (1-2) is off for a week until Saturday, September 14, when they host the Shelby Invite.

The JV prelim was was preview to the varsity drubbing.

“Obviously, we had an off night,” said Ram JV coach Jamie Watson. “We couldn't get our offense rolling. We have had three different rotations in the last three games, due to injuries. Consistency will definitely be the key to running our offense. We now have a couple weeks to work before our next game.”
