---- — Shelbyville basketball coach Stu Hott said before their last win that they just needed to get a win so the boys knew they good win. They beat Tolono by double digits, then just like that, they did it again, They beat Clinton in Clinton on Tuesday, 58-47.
Central A&M had beaten Shelbyville at the buzzer recently. Then Clinton beat central A&M by three points. Clinton would have been favored, but after the recent Ram win the taste of victory drove the Rams right over the Maroons.
Shelby has been coming out strong in the first only to fade, that is until last Friday when they finished. At Clinton, they didn’t start strong, but they sure finished strong, posting a 19-8 run in the final 8:00.
The Shelby shooters showed up again, connecting on seven 3-pointers. Cwenton Williams led the Rams with 20 points, including two bombs and a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line. The other Ram post presence Luke McConnell scored 11 points and snared 13 boards for a double-double. He shot 63% from the floor.
Five of the other Ram scorers took turns popping from 3-point range, Tyler Hendryx, Brett Peifer,Spencer Shadwell, Jordan Smith, and Tice Robinson.
Shelby shot 33% from the arc, despite just 35% from 2-point distance. The Rams shot 21 3-pointers and 26 2-pointers. That’s not a good ratio, but the Rams drew contact and got to the line so many times it offset their 3-point percentage.
Shelby grabbed 36 rebounds and had a 10 to 9 assist to turnover ratio, with seven steals. It was a good floor game by the Rams.
The Rams trailed by four after one, but then chipped away. They cut it to a 2-point game at the half, 27-25. By the end of the 3rd, the Rams had tied the game, 39-39. To quote Terminator 2, “There is no fate, but what you make.” The Rams made their own fate in the 4th by beating the Maroons black and blue in front of their home crowd.
Shelbyville got the lead late and then hit free throws like a slot machine that just keeps paying off. Shelbyville shot 10 more free throws (19-of-22) than the Maroons and made 10 more free throws (86%). Clinton made 9-of-12 (75%).
