Burton Busts Through For 1000 points

SHELBYVILLE -- Without a girls basketball team to call their own, it’s understandable that the list of Stew-Stras Comets to reach 1,000 points sat at zero entering this week. But Lindsay Burton crashed her way on to that list, scoring her 1,000th point for Shelbyville Monday night against Monticello.

Despite starting as a freshman for the Shelbyville/Stew-Stras/Windsor co-op, the possibility of getting to that milestone never crossed Burton’s mind until the end of her junior season.

“My coach was like, “You have the potential to get 1,000 points,’” Burton said. “No girl from Stew-Stras has ever done that. My coach has never had a player do that for him. It was really cool. It was amazing to get my 1,000th point.”

While she didn’t see that as a goal until late in her career, Shelbyville coach Greg Reynolds saw it early. Reynolds became the coach of Shelbyville four seasons ago, and after he knew he’d received the job, he went to watch the eighth-graders play at Shelbyville and Stew-Stras.

“I can tell you that going back to her eighth grade year, I went down and watched her play,” he said. “I’m not surprised we’re at this point. I saw that potential in her then.”

Burton needed six points entering Monday’s game and blew by it with a team-high 17 points, scoring on a layup with an assist from fellow Stew-Stras student Autumn Carson. Reynolds called her “the epitome of a student athlete”, representing all three schools, and Burton said her success at Shelbyville shows how the communities can embrace the idea of co-ops with herself, Stew-Stras’ Carson and Courtney Schultz, and Windsor’s Olivia Williamson all playing big roles for the Rams.

“I think it’s really cool, it shows a lot,” Burton said. “Stew-Stras is going to be co-oping with Windsor for a lot of sports. It shows that you can play a lot, we’ve just had to work really hard for it.”
