The Wrestling Rams were not suppose to get past Monticello in the Shelbyville 1A Regional. But they did, 180 to 173.5, as the Rams made history by claiming the regional championship.
Shelbyville crowned five individual champions. So did Monticello. For more Rams claimed 2nd place. Monticello only had two. Monty had two 3rd place finishers and Shelby none. Both teams had one 4th place finisher, each.
Sophomore Garrett Brachbill (37-4) won the 126 pound title. Junior Wyatt Fox (33-5) won the 145 pound title. Junior Lucas Duckett (38-2) won the 170-pound title. Senior Elliott Smithson (33-4) won the 220-pound title. Junior Adam Hudson (37-1) won the 152-pound title.
None of those wins were as big as Hudson's win. Hudson (state 4th-ranked) had lost to senior (3rd-ranked) Dylan Knisley of Monticello last year in the regional. He lost to him early this year and then forfeited at the conference tourney, as Hudson was nursing an injury.
Hudson was still nursing an injury at Saturday's regional, but he pulled off a huge upset. He pinned his semifinal opponent, Chuck O'Neill of Argenta, in the 1st period (1:22). In the title match Hudson earned a 4-2 decision over Knisley.
Sophomore Zack Stirrett (30-9) was runner-up at 106. Junior Jared Finley (38-2) ranked 3rd in state, placed 2nd at 138, losing to the 2nd-ranked state wrestler Nate Jozsa . Junior Andrew Mudgette (29-10) was 2nd in the 285 class.
Sophomore Caleb Cloe (25-14) also came up big claiming 2nd place in the 195-pound class. Junior Noah Applegate (23-18) went 2-2 on the day and claimed 4th place for the Rams in the 182-pound class.
