SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
CHBC blew the doors off South Central in the season-opener and had to invoke several variations of their own mercy rule and won, 50-14. The two teams met again on the first day of the Dieterich Holiday Tournament and it was a repeat, with CHBC walking away with a 80-18 win.
No mercy rule in the 1st period this time as the Hornets stung the Cougars with a 26-5 run. With CHBC scoring enough points in the 1st period to get the win, they took the foot off the accelerator and called off the swarm. They still routed South Central 17-4 in the 2nd to lead by 36 points at the break, 43-7.
Trying to set a rhythm after a long Christmas lay-off, the Hornets came out with guns blazing again in the 3rd and had a 24-9 run. South Central finally was in double digits in the 2nd half, but they never made 20 as CHBC subs shut them out in the final period, 13-0.
In their first contest to open the season, Micah Jones scored early then turned into a point guard dishing to teammates and bench players to get everyone involved in a game they had won. She distributed the ball again in this game, recording 10 assists.
However, in this game she scored at will. She limited herself to 24 points in the first meeting. This time she set an area season-high 44 points. Jones scored 21 time from the floor, shot 2-of-3 from the line and grabbed 13 rebounds to record a triple-double. She was the first girl to record a triple-double at State when she was a freshman.
There was enough bodies to go around so, Jones left some for the other two scorers from CHBC. Autumn Riley and Ava Paruleski also did their thing, scoring in double figures, once again. Riley and Paruleski scored a dozen points, each. Riley had five buckets and was a perfect 2-of-2 at the line. Paruleski knocked down a couple of treys, as well as a pair of deuces and was also a perfect 2-of-2 at the line.
Ashley Miller scored three times, Kirby Herrmann twice, and Jensyn Morrison once. South Central was led by Macie Cain with just eight points, including one triple. She was followed by Taylor Keen with six points.
CHBC was set to play again on Thursday at 4 p.m. against North Clay. North Clay was to have played Arcola at 1 p.m.
