State Champ Darnell Leads Shelby

Shayla Darnell of Shelbyville won the IESA 7AA Girls State High Jump Championship, clearing 5-0, to lead Shelby Area athletes at the meet last weekend in East Peoria. Adam Miller of Pana and Luke Bowman of Sullivan also won IESA State Championships. Miller won the 8AA boys high jump (5-11) and Bowman won the 7AA boys high jump (5-6).

Darnell also qualified in the 7AA girls 400 and finished 27th (1:06.48). Miller qualified in the 8AA boys hurdles and finished 4th (16.16). Bowman qualified in the 7AA boys long jump and finished 24th (16-4.5).

Darnell was the second Shelbyville girl to win the 7AA high jump in the last two years. The 7AA state champ in the high jump last year, Sydney Miller, followed up her state title with an 3rd place (4-11) in the 8AA high jump this year.

The Shelby Moulton 8AA boys 4x4 team scored a 4th place at State (3:48.20). The other 4th place finish from the Shelby Area came from Pana’s Colleen Weddle in the 8AA girls long jump (16-3.5). Pana 8AA girls also had two top ten finishes in the relays. The 4x400 relay was 7th (4:22.60) and the 4x100 relay was 9th (53.03). Pana’s Ian Harbert was also 9th in the 7AA boys pole vault (8-3).

Rounding out the top ten Shelbyville state finishes was Courtney Lee of Shelbyville, 10th in the 7AA high jump (4-6), the 10th place Shelby 7AA 4x200 relay (1:46.21) and the 10th place Shelby 7AA 4x400 relay (4:05.61).

Owen Herbord of Pana had a 10th place finish in the 8AA boys shot put (42-6.75). Daylee Denton of Pana also had a 10th place finish in the 8AA girls long jump (15-5.75).
