Ram Tennis Notches First Win

SHELBYVILLE, IL. —

Shelbyville boys tennis claimed their first win the season on Monday, 5-4.

"The guys played well and showed a lot of composure in some tight matches," said Ram coach Ross Forlines. "We were able to win all three tie-breakers we were involved in."

Three of the five matches the Rams won were tie-breakers. Nathan Vasko and Cameron Barker, the Ram #1 doubles, lost 4-6 in the 1st set, then won the 2nd set in dominant fashion, 6-2. They won the tie-break, 7-6.

"I was especially impressed with Cameron Barker and Nathan Vasko's doubles match," Forlines said. "They dropped the first set and won the second set. They were down 6-2 in the final tie-breaker, before reeling off six straight points to win. Especially impressed they did so well in their first match together."

In singles, Josh Hicks, (Ram #3) started down, 3-6, but won the 2nd set, 6-2, and the tie-breaker, 7-6. Ben Houska (#4) also came back. He lost the 1st set, 2-6, but came back to win the 2nd set, 6-4. He won the tie-break, 7-6.

"I also thought Ben Houska and Josh Hicks stepped up in the 3 and 4 slots," Forlines said. 'They both had to fight back and win tie-breakers to seal it. It shows a lot of character and heart to pull that off."

Nathan Vasko, the Ram #1 singles player won his match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. With the two tie-break wins in singles it tied Shelby and Paris at 3 to 3, heading into doubles. Shelby won two of the three doubles matches to notch their first win of the year.

Vasko and Barker won #1 doubles in a tie-break. Then Darin Breeden and Adam Hudson won two tie-break sets to win #2 doubles, 7-5, 7-5.
