Rams Maul Mac, Improve Against 2A Taylorville

JOHN CURTIS - Daily Union Sports Editor

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Shelbyville wrestling had a similar dominance over Decatur MacArthur on Wednesday, and although they lost to 2A 6th-ranked Taylorville, they made some headway, losing just, 49-21.

In the Shelby/Taylorville tourney, the Rams lost, but they knocked off some key Taylorville players on the way down.

Jared Finley (126) went up against Taylorville’s state-ranked Flanell. Finley was taken down twice, but escaped twice and trailed 4-2 heading into the 3rd period. Finley then outscored Flanell in the 3rd and knotted the score, 5-5. They went into overtime and Finley got the take down for the 7-5 upset.

Lucas Duckett (152) faced the 7th-ranked 2A wrestler from Taylorville, Smothers. The match was close in the 2nd, but Duckett, broke a 6-6 tie in the 3rd with a take down and won, 8-6.

“Finley was impressive in overtime,” Ram coach Greg Harkins said. “He and Duckett had big, big, big wins. Last year we got smoked. These two Taylorville kids are two very tough kids. Last year we don’t win these matches. Last year, we got beat (as a team), 62-12. It shows how far we’ve come. It also shows how much hard work and how much time these kids have put in.”

Shelby’s Wyatt Fox (138), who is an Athlete of the Week for placing 2nd at the PORTA tourney last weekend, broke a scoreless tie in the 2nd for the lead against Rodgers. Rodgers came charging back in the 3rd with a pair of escapes and a take down. But Fox’s take down in the 3rd was the difference in the, 6-5 win.

Ram freshman Garrett Brachbill, who also placed 2nd in the PORTA, Brachbill kept getting take downs in the 1st period and Miller (T) kept scoring on escapes. But, Brachbill stopped toying with Miller and just stuck him halfway in the period (1:20).

Adam Hudson (145) bounced back from a disappointing PORTA tourney. He pinned Taylorville’s Hamell in 4:28. He also won by pin in 5:05 over MacArthur’s Brown.

“Hudson wrestled well,” Coach Harkins said. “He was down after the PORTA tourney. He wanted to get a medal. So, it lit a fire for him, looking for redemption.”

Freshman Zack Stirrett (106) lost just 4-1, being taken down just twice, but escaping just once in the close decision.

MacArthur gave up six weight classes by forfeit to Shelbyville, giving up 36 points out of the gate. Of the 14 weight classes, Shelbyville and MacArthur competed in just eight matches. Shelby won five of them, all by pin, and Mac won just three, by a pin and two decisions.

Stirrett (106), Brachbill (113), Trey Wade (120), Matt Tinsman (126), Jarred Hicks (132), and Caleb Cloe (182) all won by forfeit.

Fox (138) stuck Scruggs in just 2:58 seconds. Duckett (152) also won by pin against Owens of MacArthur in 5:05.

Jordan Johnston (160), who had been injured, wrestled his first match of the season against MacArthur. He beat his opponent, Mackey, by sticking him in just 38 seconds.

Josh Hicks (170), a current Athlete of the Week for placing 3rd at PORTA, also won by pin, sticking Williams in the 1st period (1:39).

Mitch Barna (182) is still out with an injury and Elliott Smithson (285) has the flu, and Jordan Johnston (160) is coming along since his concussion.

“We hope to have him back for the super duals in Champaign after Christmas, but it will depend on therapy.” Coach Harkins said. “ Elliott was not in school today (Thursday), but we hope to have him back this weekend. Jordan is back from concussion and this was his first match back. We aren’t gonna push it.”

The Rams go to the Cumberland Tournament this Saturday, then host Carlyle and Rochester on Thursday.
