Two diamond men came up big on Saturday and after a week of sitting earned Athlete of the Week honors.
Andrew Hawkins, senior ace for the Shelbyville Rams, donned his superman cape and shot lasers to stop Hillsboro. Hawkins came in and pitched three scoreless, hit-less innings, shutting Hillsboro down. He allowed three walks, but KO’s three. Hawkins (3-0) has pitched 14 innings and allowed just three runs, three hits, walked nine and struck out 19.
Hawkins beat Windsor to open the season, going five innings with seven Ks, one hit, and one run. He beat Marshall, going six innings with nine Ks, just two runs and two hits. He also went 3-for-5 against Marshall with three RBIs. Now, he’s beaten Hillsboro, going 3 innings with 3 Ks, no runs, no hits.
Sophomore Brett Peifer, Hawkins’ Ram teammate, came up big in his first varsity start. Peifer laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to tie the score Saturday. Peifer then gave the Rams a cushion with a 2-run home run in the 6th. Peifer went 1-for-2 with three RBIs.
