SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Shelbyville out-scored St. Teresa in the 2nd half, but a big Bulldog 2nd quarter had already put the game out of reach, as St. Teresa posted a 43-27 win.
Shelbyville cleaned up their penalty problem and their passing game helped the to their biggest scoring out-put of the season. The Ram defense played better, but couldn't eliminated the big plays again and that figured in their ultimate defeat.
Shelby defense didn't give up a big play in the 1st quarter. They made St. T use a 13-play 79 yard drive to get their first score.
St. T got their1st quarter field goal on a Ram 3 and out on their first possession. The Ram punt from their own end zone turned into a run that fell short of the 1st down and St. T took over deep in Ram territory.
Shelby defense forced a 3 and out and St. T booted the 3-pointer to go up 10-0. The defense came up big again early in the 2nd quarter.
After the Ram offense's second straight 3 and out, Fox punted. On the first St T play, Caleb Cloe recovered a fumble, giving the Rams the ball on the St. T 35.
Shelby put together an 11 play drive that included a 1st down catch by Matt White and a 20-yard one-hand grab by Tristan Wade on 4th and 19 for another 1st down.
On 4th and 4 from the St. T 7, Duckett threw to Luke McConnell in the end zone, who caught a tipped pass for the score. Dylan Patch kicked the extra-point to make it a 3-point game at the 9:48 mark of the 2nd, 10-7 St T.
Then came the first big play. After the kick-off, St. T picked up a 1st down on the first play, then threw a pass to a wide open receiver for the 75 yard TD play. With the extra-point kick it was 17-7.
The Rams put together a 7-play, 27 yard drive with a Luke McConnell 1st down catch. But a late clipping call hurt them, followed by two sacks. Fox had to punt again. He put the ball down inside the St. T 1.
St. T got a 1st down, then threw a 40 yard pass on 3rd and 7. It was caught, then ran the other 17 yards for a 57 yard TD play. Big play #2. St. T was up by 17 points with 3:05 in the 2nd, 24-7.
A Ram fumble on the kick-off gave St. T the ball at the Shelby 26. St. T got a 1st down,then a holding penalty set them back. On 4th and 4, the quarterback ran the ball in from the 7. After the kick St. T was up 31-7 with 54 seconds left in the half.
St. T had 300 yards of offense in the 1st half to Shelby's -7 yards rushing and 44 yards passing. Shelby had their one touchdown as a result of their defense forcing a fumble.
Shelby took the 2nd half kick-off and went 24 yards, before an interception killed the drive.
The Ram defense came up big again. After a 3 and out, the Rams blocked the punt. Devin Peterson returned the ball to the St. T 18.
Three plays later Patch ran the ball in from 9 yards out. Patch's kick was good making it a 17-point game, 31-14. Both the Ram touchdowns to that point were set up by their defense.
The Rams were in position to make a game of it. However, St. T dug in and put together another 14-play drive covering 69 yards, capped off with a 7 yard run. Matt White blocked the extra-point and it was 37-14 St. T with 33.8 left in the 3rd.
Shelby returned the kick-off and went 7 plays. They picked up a 1st down, but then threw three incomplete passes. Fox punted, but it was short.
St. T had two negative plays, then connected on a 67 yard TD pass play on 3rd and 16. The kick missed, but the final nail was in the coffin with 8:02 left in the game, 43-14.
The mortal blow had been struck, but Shelby wasn't done. Shelby got a big play, a screen pass to Wyatt Fox that went 57 yards to the St. T 5. Three plays later Tyler Hendryx stretched out the ball to break the plane of the goal line. With 6:03 left, Shelby was down by three touchdowns, 43-21.
Shelby kicked off and St. T started another long drive. They picked up two 1st downs and covered 28 yards. But a motion penalty on 4th and 3, killed the drive. They punted to put Shelby deep in their own territory with a minute to play.
Jared Finley ran the punt 10 yards to the Ram 15. Duckett hit Finuckett threw to McConnell and an interference penalty was called, giving the Rams 1st and 10 at the St. T 25.
With 32 seconds left Duckett threw to Hendryx in the end zone and he caught it for the score. The 2-point conversion failed and the Rams lost by two touchdowns with 23.6 seconds remaining, 43-27.
Shelbyville (1-4) returns home next week to host winless Clinton.
