Comets Dismantle Dieterich

SHELBYVILLE, IL. —

Stew-Stras (23-12) the #1 seed in the Dieterich Regional didn't play like it to start their semifinal match against Dieterich. Once they got warmed up, though, it was lights out for Dieterich with the Comets winning, 25-21, 25-3.

"We didn't come out with much spark in game 1," said Comet coach Ronda Schlechte. "Service errors killed us, but we were able to stay alive. Game 2, we came out strong and took the lead quickly with Kendall (Knop) serving a 5-point streak, followed by Sarah (Locke) serving 17 consecutive points.

Baylee Quast had one of her strongest performances at setter, dishing out 18 assists in a too-quick, 2 game set. Becca Schlechte was also a double-digit performer, as the net assassin, recording a team-high 10 kills. The usual net threats, Kendall Knop and Brittani Tabbert, had seven kills, each. Tabbert added a block assist.

Stew-Strashad a 27 kill attack and 24 assists towards those kills. They only needed 10 digs to fend off Dieterich.

Knop did more damage at the service line, delivering five of the nine Comet aces. Locke had three aces to go with her double-digit serving performance. Clara Kaufman was a wall for the Comets. She had two solo blocks and two blocks assists to go with her three kills, for another 7 net-point performer.

Stew-Stras (23-12) will face NTC foe Neoga (22-13) once again. Stew-Stras  beat Neoga, 25-20, 27-25 on September 24. They also beat Neoga, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, in the Gold Flight of the NTC Tourney. The Comets won twice before, however, the third meeting can be a trap match.

In their most recent 3-game match with Neoga, Stew-Stras fired 47 kills, an area season-high. Brittani Tabbert had an area season-high 21 kills in one match. Quast dished 25 assists and Schlechte dished 20 assists, 45 in one match, an area season-high. Stew-Stras cannot rely on those past two wins and take the regional final for granted against the 20-win Indians.

"The girls know we have to come out strong on Thursday," Coach Schlechte said."
