Rams Rout Raymond

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Shelby used an 18-1 second period run to completely dismantle Raymond Lincolnwood in the first round of the Nokomis 8th grdade tournament on Tuesday. The Rams never let Raymond get their wheels back on and Shelby blew them out, 33-7.

The 1st quarter was all defense and frantic nerves. The frenetic nature of the 1st fed into the Rams press, limiting Raymond shots. Shelby put up a lot of shots, but only made 1 of 11 shots.

Payton Howell hit a transition two to give Shelby a lead over halfway thtrough the 1st quarter. Raymond came right back to hit a pull up jumper to tie. Raymond scored on an inbound play under their own basket at the buzzer to go up 4-2 at the end of one.

The Ram presss fueled their run in the 2nd period. Turner Pullen got to the line  and sank both shots to tie the score less than a minute into the period, 4-4. On the next possession Cade Watson was fouled and he split a pair for the lead, 5-4. The Rams never trailed again.

Shelby trapped on the press and got the ball right back. Tylr Gottfriedt drove, then hit a step back jumper, 7-4. Pullen stole the ball two possessions later and sparked a fast break. He got the ball to Howell, who scored on the break, 9-4.

Cade Watson was fouled again and buried both shots, 11-4. Raymond finally got to the line and made 1-of-2 shots to trail 11-5 halfway through the 2nd. The Rams were boxing out on the Raymond big and he got called for over the back on rebounds.

Howell went to the line for a 1 and 1 with 2:13 left in the half. Howell made both shots. Two possessions later the Rams got four shots at the basket and Gottfriedt made a put back and was fouled. He completed the 3-point play nand put Shelby up, 16-5.

Pullen scored insideinside a minute to go in the half, 18-5. He went up inside defense and missed, but went to the other side of the basket, got the rebound and put it back in with 6.9 left in the half, 20-5.

Inside the first minute of the 3rd, Shelby stole the ball again and Watson scored, 22-5. Howell stole the ball a minute later and got it to Gottfriedt. Instead of taking a step back shot, this time he stepped in and scored, 24-5.

Gottfriedt shot on the next possession, missed, but Watson got the put back, 26-5. Mason Cameron's defense caused another Raymond turnover. On the whistle, with a 20point lead, Shelbyville subs flooded the floor with 4:00 left in the 3rd.

The Ram momentum cooled. Raymond was called for a technical foul and Aaron Byars went to the line. He made both shots, but was called for a line violation on the second one, 27-5 Rams.

With just 2.2 seconds left in the 3rd, a Raymond guard lobbed a pass to their big and he was able to score, for a 27-7 total through three periods.

Shelby starters took the floor to open the 4th. In the first minute, Cameron defense caused a Raymond time-out, Pullen had a steal and Gottfriedt had a steal and scored, 29-7.

Raymond drove the ball to the paint, but the Ram defense collapsed and caused a travel. On the whistle, Shelby subs flooded the floor with 3:57 left in the game.

With 2:34 left in the game, Braden Young rebounded a free throw miss and scored, 31-7. Two possessions later, Eli Houska was fouled. He made both shots and capped the score, 33-7.

Tylr Gottfriedt led the Ram balanced attack with nine points, five coming in the 18-1 run. Cade Watson scored seven points, all in the middle quarters. Turner Pullen scored six points, all in the 2nd quarter run. Payton Howell also scored six points, four of then in the 2nd period.

Shelbyville (1-0) plays the winner of Pana/Hillsboro on Thursday in the semifinal.
