SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Shelbyville basketball still couldn't get over the hump as they dropped their fourth straight pool play game at the Vandalia Holiday Tourney on Saturday, losing to Greenville, 57-44.
Shelby out-rebounded the Comets 31 to 24, but poor shooting from the arc (2/17) hampered the Rams. Turnovers were also a problem again (21), but it was free throws that cost them the game.
Shelbyville got to the line in this game and shot 17 free throws. However, they could only make eight (47%). Greenville got to the line for 25 free throws and made 17 (68%) a 9-point edge in a 13-point win.
Greenville also had a 4-point edge scoring from the floor (52%). That, plus free throws gave them the margin of victory.
The Rams and the Comets were locked in a 13-13 tie after the 1st period, then Shelbyville took a 1-point lead at the break, 27-26.
Greenville picked upo the pace in the 3rd and the Rams lost the lead, but it was still anyboidy's game at the start of the 4th with the Comets leading by just three, 43-40.
Greenville finished strong as they blue-streaked away from the Rams on a crushing 14-4 final run for the win.
The Ram leading scorer for the game, Cwenton Williams finished with 11 points, but on the bench with five fouls.
Devin Peterson was among the Ram leaders again with eight points and six rebounds. Spencer Shadwell scored eight, including two treys. Luke McConnell got on the board in this game with seven points and a team-high eight boards.
Shelbyville got a better percentage of their scoring from the post this game, McConnell, Bart Kennell, and Williams had 21 of the 44 points.
Shelby had just one player in double figures, while Greenville had three in balanced proportion. Schaufelberger had 14, Lawrence 12, and Leitschuh 10.
Greenville finished pool play 1-3 and the Rams 0-4. Shelbyville will play in the 9th place game on Monday.
